What Is the AFQT Score?
The Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score is a percentile score ranging from 1 to 99. It is not a raw score — it compares your performance against a nationally representative sample of Americans who took the test in 1997.
An AFQT score of 65 means you performed better than 65% of that reference group. The AFQT score is calculated from just 4 of the 10 ASVAB subtests — Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge.
AFQT Raw Score Formula
AFQT = AR + MK + VE × 2
Where VE (Verbal Expression) = Word Knowledge + Paragraph Comprehension
Because VE is doubled, vocabulary and reading comprehension carry extra weight in your final score.
The 4 Subtests That Determine Your AFQT
These are the only subtests that count toward your AFQT score. Focus here first.
Tests vocabulary and the meaning of words in context. Improving your vocabulary is one of the fastest AFQT score gains available.
Tests reading comprehension from short passages. Combined with WK, Verbal Expression contributes heavily to your final score.
Tests word-problem math. This is one of the hardest subtests to improve quickly, but consistent practice yields big gains.
Tests algebra, geometry, and number theory. Often improvable faster than AR because it is skill-based rather than reasoning-based.
How the Percentile Score Works
Your AFQT is a percentile rank, not a percentage of questions answered correctly. It reflects how you performed relative to a reference population.

What Is a Good AFQT Score?
31–49
Meets Minimum
Qualifies for Army and Marines enlistment. Limited job options — you'll have fewer MOS choices and reduced bonus eligibility.
50–64
Good
Qualifies for all branches and a wide range of jobs. A solid score that puts you in the average-to-above-average range nationally.
65–92
Very Good
Highly competitive for all branches. Opens up technical MOS roles, enlistment bonuses, and officer candidate programs at some branches.
93–99
Exceptional
Top 7% nationally. Qualifies for virtually every job and every branch. Some special forces and intelligence roles target this range.
How to Improve Your AFQT Score
Most recruits can raise their AFQT score significantly with focused, targeted preparation.
Master Word Knowledge First
Vocabulary is the fastest subtest to improve. Learn 20 new words daily using root words, prefixes, and suffixes. A 10-point vocabulary improvement can meaningfully raise your AFQT.
Drill Arithmetic Reasoning Daily
AR is double-weighted in the AFQT formula. Set a goal of 30 practice problems per day. Focus on rate, ratio, and percent questions — they appear most frequently.
